Maria Dominguez' twenty year career in making public art in the form of community murals have gained
her the respect of her contemporaries. The award- winning mural designs have
been conceptualized both individually and collectively. Most often she
integrates the selected community through a series of dialogues, selections
of ideas, images and hands-on activities. These efforts often capture the
true essence and spirit of the community. This driving force has lead her to
a number of commissions.
In 2001 the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA) commissioned her to design “El-Views”, a permanent
work for the Chauncey Street elevated station along the JZ Subway lines in
Brooklyn, NY. The Willet Hauser Studios eloquently transformed sixteen
original paintings from the artist into dazzling stained glass jewels.
The work captures a slice of the local and vibrant community as she depicts moments of “daily
life” often overlooked by the heavy demands of a busy city. This work,
among 16 others, received the “Excellence in Design” award 2003 from the New
York Municipal Society.
